Accomplishments
How can a vibrant, regional network of parent leaders
and organizations transform the quality of life for low-income
children and families in the Bay Area? By bringing together diverse
parent organizations to develop alliances and skills, share information,
and organize for collective action on common concerns, the Bay
Area Parent Leadership Action Network (PLAN) is building a movement
for social change for families.
Founded on a collective vision to build a
parent-led, social justice movement for families, PLAN seeks to
unite and galvanize parents, guardians and allies across issues,
geography, language, and culture.
Our core program areas include:
- Grassroots Leadership: PLAN directly engages low-income parents
and parent organizations in the leadership of the network through
our 16-member Leadership Council, which decides issues, strategies,
and policies for the network, as well as designs and leads actions
and forums.
- Alliance Building and Action: PLAN provides opportunities
for low-income parents from throughout the Bay Area to come
together twice a year in Parent Action Forums. Forums allow
parents and organizations to build alliances with each other
and take action on common concerns.
- Training and Capacity Building: PLAN provides training to
parents and organizations interested in developing leadership
and advocacy for education equity using our PLAN to LEAD curriculum.
Training programs include a 2-day Leadership in Education training
and a 6-month Training of Trainers.
- Information Sharing: PLAN acts as a regional hub of information
for parent advocates and leaders, providing information through
www.parentactionnet.org and a 400-member Parent Action e-list.
Since our beginnings in July 2004, PLAN has:
- Engaged more than 300 participants in dialogue
and action on issues such as education equity, the state budget,
and parents’ electoral power
- Trained more than 200 parents and organizational
staff in leadership and advocacy skills for educational equity
- Co-coordinated parent action on issues that
affect families, such voter education and mobilization for the
November 2005 Special Election and response to the 2005 and
2006 state budgets
- Become a hub of information for more than
400 Parent Action e-list subscribers and www.parentactionnet.org
users
- Launched a membership campaign and a Social
Justice for Families agenda-building process.
