Leadership Council

The Bay Area Parent Leadership Action Network (PLAN) is a regional network of parent leaders and organizations working to build a social justice movement for families. PLAN unites and strengthens diverse parents and organizations fighting for education equity, quality child care, and economic justice through alliance building, leadership development, and action.

The Leadership Council is an advisory body made up of organization and parent representatives. The purpose of PLAN’s Leadership Council is to help set the priorities and develop and implement the strategies for the network.

Purpose:

  • Identify priority issues for the Network
  • Develop strategies for campaigns and other opportunities for collective action
  • Help build PLAN’s membership base and organizing structure
  • Help support PLAN campaigns and activities.

Leadership Council members are:

  • Individuals or organizations that represent or work with low and moderate income parents/guardians
  • Commited to working toward positive change through parent organizing and leadership development
  • Reflective of the geographic and ethnic diversity of the Bay Area.

Parent participation:

  • We strongly encourage organizational members to select a parent leader and a staff member to jointly represent your organization. This is a leadership development opportunity!
  • Meetings held weeknight evenings in San Francisco or Oakland at accessible locations.
  • Child care, translation,  and food provided
  • Parent leaders receive a $20 transportation stipend for each meeting they attend.

Responsibilities:

  • Attend bimonthly meetings and bimonthly teleconferences (minimum of one-year commitment)
  • Participate in at least two major PLAN activities per year (such as forums, actions, trainings, etc.)
  • Encourage leaders and staff in your organization to participate in PLAN activities and campaigns.

Benefits of participation:

  • Access free training, leadership development, and advocacy opportunities
  • Learn from a diverse group of parent and organization leaders
  • Connect to a larger movement for change
  • Increase the impact of your organization’s or communities’ efforts
  • Provide new opportunities for emerging parent leaders in your organization.

LEADERSHIP COUNCIL MEETINGS:

Regional meetings are held 3rd Thursdays, 6-8pm.

If you’re interested in attending, please contact Patricia Rocha Fernandez, Leadership and Advocacy Coordinator, 510-444-7526 ext. 304, patricia AT parentactionnet DOT org.
