The Achievement Gap, Community Violence & Racial Justice
October 20, 2007
More than 75 parents, youth, and community members from across the Bay Area joined together on Saturday, October 20, 2007, for a Parent Action Forum linking the issues of the achievement gap, violence in the community, and racial justice.
Assemblymember Loni Hancock, Oakland City Councilmember Ignoacio De La Fuente, School Board member Greg Hodge, as well as staffers from the offices of Assemblymember Sandre Swanson, Senator Don Perata, and Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums heard concerns from parents, students and community leaders.
Participants also called on California Superintendent of Schools, Jack O'Connell, to come to the Bay Area and meet with a delegation of parent and community leaders to discuss their concerns. O'Connell, who is organizing an "Achievement Gap Summit" next month in Sacramento, declined to attend PLAN's forum.
The event kicks off a campaign to raise the voices diverse communities, and to define and advocate for solutions that address root problems in East Bay communities. Stay tuned for a summary of the forum’s recommendations and follow-up actions! |
